Making privacy in the city
Return to DiscussionsSince I purchased my home in the suburbs, I've planted a complete privacy screening with trees and shrubs. Only problem I have now is watching out for police helicopters that like to buz around on occasion. I keep a towel handy to cover up if they fly over too close. Hopefully in the very near future I will relocate to a rural area for more privacy, less enclosure of my property, and a better feeling of freedom where I'm at.
I prefer not to have to hide myself on my own property from prying eyes!

I have planted tall trees round my back garden for privacy too. Here in the UK anyone who takes special steps to see into my garden (with a drone, binoculars or a ladder) are in the wrong for invading my privacy. That applies no matter how naked I am and no matter what I am doing. One neighbour cut down the privacy screening knowing I'm a nudist. She complained she couldn't see enough of my garden. And of course she is welcome to see whatever she wants as far as I'm concerned.
It is a shame that in the land of the free you have to think if a police helicopter crew see you nude in your garden what will happen to you.
Where I live it is mainly the military helicopters which might fly over if I am in the garden but in most cases they avoid going over properties. Yes sometimes the helicopter comes near who is checking the electric cables for faults and the last time it did this I moved out of the way as the wires it was checking was very near where I live but next time I won't bother and if they see me nude they do.
I don't understand why you would worry about helicopters. They can't really see anything at that distance unless they are specifically looking at you with zoom cameras. They have much better things to worry about and watch for than a naked person in their own backyard minding their own business.
I also don't worry about the neighbors. I have two two story homes overlooking my yard and there is very little area that isn't visible. Years ago we talked to the neighbors and let them know we weren't shy and they might see more than might be expected. They responded basically 'whatever'. I'm in my yard naked just about every single day when it's warm enough cleaning, working, sunning, gardening etc. with no issues.
I don't understand why you would worry about helicopters.
Police Helicopters are usually busy monitoring things like traffic flow and congestion, gridlock or, in the worst scenario, following escape routes taken by getaway cars involved in criminal activity. If they happened to see a naked guy in his yard, minding his own business, I don't think they'd give it a second thought, maybe make a humorous comment at most. Now if they saw you naked on Main Street or in a parking lot, that'd be a different story. . .
I don't think I woukd worry about helicopters. They have a huge area they are surveilling and I doubt that they are zeroing in on people in their yards. But then I am not a woman, and can imagine that ypu feel that your body might be more of interest to nosy helicopter pilots than mine. Keeping a towel handy in the yard isnt a bad idea though.
Hope you can find a home free of helicopter traffic.
I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding of the laws within the USA change depending on the state. The general summary of all the states seems to be that you should do your best to stay hidden behind privacy fences, shades, and the like. Then, if someone sees you, it's because they were really trying. Even then, each situation will be different and will be determined by the judge you happen to get for your case.
I have heard of one case in particular where someone got in trouble even while in his own home. However, I don't know the whole situation so it may have been a situation where he was standing in his bay window with the shades wide open sipping his coffee in a tripod stance.
What I do in the Twin Cities: I have nothing in my yard that is remotely private so I stick to inside my house. I have dark shades that are closed 99% of the time and the window on the door has a sign on it where someone coming up to the door would see the sign right where my crotch would be. Theoretically. Still, I live close to a school as well and when children are involved, people's emotions tend to get crazily out of proportion so I don't plan on doing anything else unless we move to a more rural area.
The laws vary widely not only from state to state but city to city. I can't remember where but a long time ago I posted the actual language of the indeceny law at the state level here in Calufornia and essentially it is along the line of naked AND intent to sexually offend. Of course you can always get officers and people that don't know the law and still hassle you. I understand Arkansas has very strict laws.
Most law enforcement departments that have cameras or helicopters have written policies that bring harsh punishments for mis-using or observing things around private residences unless its part of an investigation. Most officers know they would be fired for taking a pic or even talking about it to other officers.
We had a balloon go over our outdoor naked BBQ while we played crooked croque and half the people jumped under the house overhang and the other half of us waved.
My backyard oasis is restricted to a 8 x 16 ft part of the deck nearest the house but I put a towel over the handrail so the neighbors 2 story windows can't see.
