Questions about river island
Return to DiscussionsHi once again folks, thanks for the replies to my first post.I have a few questions about RI.
Are you better off bringing own food in?
Do mobile phones work there?
Regarding the nights does it get cold, one blanket or two?
Is it safe to swim in the river?
Is it cool to mingle with folks?
just wondering is it ok to ask someone to put sunscreen on your back because the last thing I want is to ruin the experience by suffering from sun burn but I also dont want to offend anyone either.
Thanks guys I am truly looking forward to experiencing the lifestyle.
Here are my answers. Somepeoplewould say otherwise. Are you better off bringing own food in? Yes. There is a shop, but it has limitedsupplies.Do mobile phones work there? No. And that is part of the beauty of the place in my opinion. There is a pay phone if you need to call out.Regarding the nights does it get cold, one blanket or two?Depends on the time of year. If you are used to coastal weather, the temperatures can be a bit more than expected: hot in summer; cold inwinter.
Is it safe to swim in the river? Generally yes. I would think it best to swim at one of the beaches, and having company is always a good idea. Rivers have the usual hazards.
Is it cool to mingle with folks? Absolutely. Depends on the people. A lot of people are happy to chat, but some like to keep to themselves.
just wondering is it ok to ask someone to put sunscreen on your back because the last thing I want is to ruin the experience by suffering from sun burn but I also dont want to offend anyone either. If you do so at the beach, there is no reason not to ask someone to help out. The worst they will do is refuse. And I know what you mean. I tend to miss a spot below my left shoulder blade, so get a funny shaped spot there.Enjoy the lifestyle. I look forward to a follow up report.
When you finally get sick of NOT doing it.I've been wanting to live as nature intended for about 10 years. Finally I got the courage to go to a clothing optional beach and let it all hang out. It was amazing, I felt FREE and being not much of one for socialising. I felt comfortable amongst others for the first time in a long time. Then I found a little hide away called River Island in NSW Australia. Here I stayed for 1 week, Wanted to stay for ever.Living as a TrueNudist, met some great people, and just Really Enjoyed life for the first time in my life. Can't wait to go back.
I think jorgine and ozdogster will not be surprised to find that I agree with their comments. It is a great venue and I enjoyed catching up with both of them there. Hope to be able to catch up with them there again some day. Pity it is so far from Brisbane
I am curious to know which dam you aretaking about. Myunderstanding is that the Wollondilly River (whichRiver Island sits on) has a largecatchment, and so any rain in that catchment can have a big effecton it. This Wingecarribee River also joins it within the nature reserve. I was there just the other weekend, and saw theimpact that the rain inGoulburn had on the river level.By the way, this is the sameriver that forms the main catchment for Warragamba Dam. Yes, I have been swimming in Sydney's water. :-) Not sure about the vans. I thought that was acouple of decades ago. When I startedgoing there in 1993,there were no vans at theRiverside camping area.
Yes, the nights can be warm in summer. In Spring andAutumn the sun sets early andrises late, so it can get someone cold over night. Be preparedeither way.
We werelucky to have the sauna running the otherweekend, but yes the firerestrictions do limit when it is fired up.
When going on walks (and we didn't much last time due to the water level of the river being so high) dowatch out for snakes in the warmer months. The red belly black snakes will generally avoid you, but there is the odd brown snake. I've only every heard of one person beingbitten, but it is nature, sotake care.
I normally take my Forester to River Island, but have done it in a Mazda 121. Take is easy, and be extra careful in the wet.Wombeyan Caves road hasimprovedimmensely over the years, with more and more beingsealed.
