Return to DiscussionsI have this idea lately. I am tired of the repeated reference of the words nudism, nude, dressed, undressed, what would other people say.
I am working on a text actually. I have built the environment and the main characters in my mind, I am still working the context (the dramatic feature). The characters interact with each other, they enjoy nature, and up the reader may undress them virtually if he/she wants to. There will be no reference of their nudity in the text. Their nudity is a way of leaving in their closed environment so they really don't care if they are dressed or not.
Would you consider this as self censorship or evasion of... (whatever). Do you need to be reminded that the characters are now nude and exposed?
That pretty much describes just about ANY story then. Without a reference to nudity or lack thereof, it's just a story. Any run of the mill story could incorporate nudity in the reader's imagination. Most textiles will read it as a textile story, and even many naturists, accustomed to textile stories will assume that the characters are "meant" to be clothed.

Which leads to a different challenge: play with the reader's mind. What kind of situation can be perceived in a different way if the reader knows, or knows not, that the characters are naked.

I think it could be interesting if ,in the initial intro to the character, it was made clear they only wore clothing when required. Then the reader can place the character in attire as they see approximate for the situations. Confirmation would come as descriptions of the brick floor of the pub was cool and inviting to walk upon, or the breeze of the meadow was a cooling relief from the dense forest. Dont think you can do it with no reference to preferred state of (in)dress.
I am already 9000 words into a new text (in Greek, sorry) following the principle "avoid any direct reference to nudism". I also want to avoid descriptions and dialogues (?) I am good at writing correspondence so I decided to experiment a bit, and all I have written so far are emails among the characters! When the characters reunite for the summer holidays I intend to switch to diary notes of the newcomer among them.
There is a company of 8 friends (4 couples). Their ages are 40 to 50. There is a house in the country with an almost private beach as well as another house close enough. There are old stories from the 30s with murders involving the inhabitants of these houses, as well as a story with a stalker from the 90s. There are also two secret lovers who exchange passionate emails. Their identity will be uncovered towards the end.
As soon as I had the pieces of the puzzle, the whole story was revealed in my head automatically as if I input the data into an AI software. I was disappointed a bit because the story turned to be dramatic and no other resolution popped up in my mind.
There are a few points that trouble me regarding the relations among the characters, such as dual relationships, group regulations (a private savoir vivre) and interactions with the inhabitants of the other house. I would be happy to read your comments before I continue.
I have thought about writing something similar myself. The characters are nude but you never directly mention it, although there should be some hints to make the point, that's the hard part, hinting at it without making it obvious.
