Pittsfield artist Katherine Gundelfinger has collected the requisite 200 signatures to place a local question on the November ballot sure to test public mores: Should the states definition of nudity be changed to allow women to sunbathe topless? Gundelfinger has been crusading for that right for years, but has been repeatedly rebuffed by city officials.
The point of designating an area to top-free sunbathing is not to provide erotic entertainment for peoples viewing pleasure, she told The Berkshire Eagle in 2007. The point is to create safe space for women who desire to feel the sun on their breasts for emotional and physical well-being.
The nonbinding question, if approved by voters in the district where she lives, would not immediately transform Pittsfields modest swimming holes into nude beaches. Instead, it would instruct the citys state representative to support legislation allowing topless bathing.
No word yet whether Governor Deval Patrick, who owns a home in the Berkshires, would sign the bill.

It should be noted that for many years, the neighboring town of Lenox played host to the Eastern Naturist Gathering at Eastover Resort, without fuss or controversy. The neighboring town of Hancock has been home to a nudist park since the early 1960s -- Berkshire Vista, and its predecessor resort, Birch Acres.
And there are several "swimmin' holes" in the area, and nude-friendly Vermont isn't that far away.
