Running around with no clothes on--we could catch a death of a cold or, even worse, pneumonia! Return to DiscussionsToday a raging blizzard hit, it's been great being at home, not needing to be at work or anything like that--just watch the snow blow around outside all day long. Tomorrow our driveway will need clearing. When younger I would've tried shoveling it myself, but now hire a guy with snowblower to come by and do it. I wouldn't want to be younger for anything!
I thought this would b a good discussion topic for here, since I'm sure we've been glad to be old at one time or another. I hope others will add their own thoughts, no matter how short or what the topic.
I totally agree with you that at some time we just enjoy our age ! I 'm glad I retired from my job when I did because I simply am busier now than I ever was, doing things at my own pace and enjoying what I do without any pressure! I don't think I could sell my self to an organization today in order to keep my job, much less take orders from someone younger and less experienced, with some fancy degree and text book knowledge, recruited at a much lower salary, but not knowing their ass from their elbow when it comes to being practical and with it on the job! There is a time and place for everything and nothing could be nicer than growing old gracefully. Of course there is no reason not to be young at heart!
I do a lot of DIY work,and I'm not thrilled that I've lost a bit in the quality of my work. I just don't see as well as I used to, and I can tell my work isn't what it used to be. But on the plus side, I get the "senior discount" at the grocery now. Plus my Doc told my during my last annual physical that I'm out of the age range for testicular cancer! LOL. So, I guess that's something.
Since I retired I don't have to be such a conformist. While working I had to conform to the committee determined requirements, had to conform to wearing what was deemed appropriate for the situation, had to conform to the proper speech and decorum determined by the situation. I even had to be "respectable" in my private life.
I have never been a non-conformist. I never died my hair purple to "make a non-conformist" statement. But, I have always wondered what the damn use was for a necktie. Why did my casual shorts have to be at the knee, below the knee, above the knee or whatever. Why couldn't I wear my nylon running shorts to the store in town? If I find Vibram Five Finger shoes most comfortable, why do I have to wear the latest style cross trainers? etc. etc.
I still conform...JUST A WHOLE LOT LESS! I don't go naked to Lowes! Rationally I should be able to go naked into Lowes to buy a can of paint. But, I would probably be arrested, committed to a mental health evaluation, and placed in custodial care. I'm old enough to realize that all my actions have consequences. I am a hedonist. I ALWAYS look after my own best interest. I still conform when the cost of non-conformity, rational or irrational, is too great. But, being retired, gives me independence and the cost of non-conformity is much less. I can now just be a "silly old man"! If it doesn't do damage to someone else than leave me alone!
