Nude Vermont
Return to DiscussionsRecently learned public nudity is legal in vt! With a few local exceptions (Brattleboro?) . Went for nude hike w a group of 8 others this past summer in Appalachian trail area. Peru Mtn and Griffths lake . Nudity in vermont is legal as long as you leave your home/res nude. Interesting provision nonetheless a great opportunity for us nudists! Hope to do more hikes this summer!
Yes, Vermont is truly an oasis for us nudists. With that said, while nudity is not illegal in most of Vermont, with a few town exceptions, we should not push the envelope and go nude where clearly inappropriate. The reason Brattleboro now has an anti nudity ordinance is because one too many thought walking through downtown Brattleboro was acceptable. Use common sense when visiting the state so Vermont can remain nudist friendly.
The situation in Brattleboro seems to fluctuate - it's not clear to me at the moment whether nudity is legal. I would avoid it in downtown or the park but do enjoy the long walk along the West River as one of my favorite (and very easy) nude walks - set the GPS for 125 Spring Tree Road, Brattleboro. There are definitely ordinances in Rutland and Burlington, though there have been occasional nude walkers in Burlington that have been reported in the press. In any event, I'm looking foward to warm weather again so I can hit the trails, hopefully with the freehikers group and those I was able to join this past season.
I did dome research and Brattleboro seemed 2007? To outlaw it one week and according to dated articles, reversed course the following week.
The "big event" was in 2007 when a group of younger people (20s) came to town and used the park as a meeting place, enjoying clothes-freedom in the process. That event prompted an ordinance and then it was reversed, then it was reinstituted, then winter came and nudity became self-regulating.
Based on this discussion, I went to the town ordinances to see if there was something that applied - there is.
https://brattleboro.gov/code-of-ordinances - Chapter 13, Article V
Public nudity is prohibited and the list of places is long. However, if reported or observed, the "officer observing any person in a state of nudity or receiving the complaint should order the person to dress." Fines follow if the offender fails to stay clothed.
Guess I'll restrict my nude hiking to outside of Brattleboro (and Rutland and South Burlington).
