I made my own for years. Out of copper and leather. Leather was great in the winter but copper was closer to the real c-rings. But copper was bad about tarnishing when worn on my penis. I had some great designs for copper but the leather I had was not as comfortable. Maybe it was the type of leather. Only found a couple of different designs to try.
I had found a mens store that would fit you for the correct size. Mind you I had to calm down before and after he was on his knees in front of me in the dressing room. Well I had to be naked to put them on. lol
Yeah, the sizing is quite important for comfort. Staying flaccid is key to getting the right size. Some of the designs were stretchy so that helped :)
