Bare-foot and minimal shoe running

Return to Discussions

Does anyone have much experience of this? I've decided to switch from cushioned shoes to vivobarefoot ones mainly to force myself to get my posture sorted out, and take some impact out of my knees. They suffer quite a bit just through normal walking. Since running, my legs have strengthened which seems to have helped the knees, but I'm concerned that the shock isn't doing them any favours and I'm setting myself up for something nasty further down the treadmill.
I'm drawn to the philosophy of bare-foot running, but my initial research has been interesting. It seems that despite the original claims when the recent trend started, a lot of people who took it up nevertheless continued to get running injuries. However this seems to be because people only really took to the shoes and the idea that they should be striking with their forefoot, rather than their heel. Basically they were doing it wrong, and the forefoot strike isn't a cause of good posture but an effect of good posture.
That said I'm quite sensitive to that kind of criticism, because it smacks of "well you didn't pray hard enough". Either way, I guess I'm committed to finding out for myself.
