I'm Gonna Stop Stinking This Place Up!
Return to DiscussionsThere are plenty of websites out there with carbon calculators so you can measure your personal pollution. I recently measured mine and was horrified at the tons of carbon I am creating just commuting to and from work. Although my vehicle is semi efficient I commute 140 miles round trip for my job 5 days a week. My wife commutes 54 miles round trip. We don't rack up much useless miles as we combine ourerrand running with our commutes. Factor in our school aged childrens sports, social, and school activities and there is so much more. Heck just going to my son's football and basketball games equates to 1000's of miles each season! Therefore we have decided to relocate close to where we are working. This will save 75% on emissions as our children attend school by where my wife is employed. The other savings will come in the form of dollars which is the icing on the cake. My only dilemma is whether to build or purchase a home. I'm a big believer in recycling distressed structures thus preserving the indigenous architecture. We love our house we own now and have enjoyed it, and our area for the last nearly 8 yrs, but for the sake of reducing our carbon footprint, we must make this change. This will amount to a huge reduction of our personal pollution. Who knows maybe a really clean running car will follow formy wife and a biodiesel truck for me. It is more important and usefulto implement Green policies in our personalapplications than to rant about corporate and governmental policies. My dad used to always say; "Sweep off your own porch before you tell others that their's is messy." And please rememberyou all, to RETHINK, REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE!
hey sounds like you are taking a big step in helping the environment, now that you are going to move closer..maybe you guys can start riding a bike too, believe it or not but riding is a lot more fun than driving
oh and if you could build a house?..that would be awesome, a solar house would be sweet
