Return to DiscussionsHank Williams Snr and Hank Williams 3 are both great. I like loads of artist especially Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Brad Paisley....and from yesteryear Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Charley Pride....then there are British & Irish Artist that are great.....
We mostly listen to older country. Both George's, Willie, Waylon, Johnny, etc but enjoy a lot of our great Texas acts as well. WOW! When Gene Watson hits that high note in "farewell party" I still gets goosebumps. Glad to find this group.
Let's see I think I need to start with "Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys", and it then ranges up and through artists such as Kenny Chesney and Lee Ann Womack. Not to much into the new country as I think that the new artists have lost their way as to where country music came from. It now is more sounding like "Hip Hop" or Pop than conveying a rich and distinct melody with a story that is told in the words. One of the best that comes to my mind is "Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning", by Alan Jackson in response to the 911 attack in NYC. Country Music , to me, has always had a message and sung pretty much from the heart.

I agree and we sometimes miss the fiddle and steel guitar. I used to work nights and there was a little country station that broadcast trucking songs during one DJ and older country from the 40's on up with another. The greatest part was the two DJ's that played the older country. It was obvious that drank on the job and as the show went on you could tell they were getting blitzed.
