Personally I have never had a problem. I have been hosting for 5 years and have made some great friends some that I am sure will be a lifetime. Like anything, look at the profile and see what other hosts have to say. Always go with your gut if something does not seem right just simply say no. The best part of C.S. is meeting people so understand you will meet all kinds of personalities some that you simply will not click with, but that is not saying they would not be a great guest. I have used online hospitality exchanged all over the world, Couchsurfing BeWelcome, Warmshowers and have been good to great to well interesting experiences. I have had people trust me with a come and go pass for their home, been given great meals, tours, tips, and wonderful conversation. Oddly enough the strangest / interesting experiences occurred just 2 hours down the road in my state capital. I would not say bad or even dangerous , but one guy listed his occupation as "human guinea pig" which meant the local drug company tested drugs on him. His memory was shot. The other guy had an altar in the corner of his living room with books about Druids, Pagans, crosses and Star of Davids. He was a master of divinity student and think was covering all his bases.
Here at my home I have hosted 75 people who have pedaled up to my door. I have left many of them here unattended with no issues. All would be welcome to come again. And have enjoyed many a charming conversation while soaking bare in the hot tub with them.
A couple of passing nudists travelers have stopped by while driving thru the area. My only connection with them have been either here on TN or Netnude.
So bottom line online hospitality exchanges are a wonderful way to save money AND meet some fascinating people and adding some stories to my travels.
So don't listen to the worry warts who think that the only safe place to stay is a mainline hotel. Remember the movie Psycho? that was at the Bate's Motel. THere are millions of people who offer their home as a way to meet new friends
