Kayak
Return to Discussionskayaks are like gloves they can fit you good or not so good imo, i started with a inflatable but it wasn't what i want next a old town vapor which paddles and tracks good but is a sit in and as i age it was hard getting into next a tamarack a sit on from wallyword i got a great deal during xmas a few year back and i really like it . oh a sit on is easier to fish from imo too. but again just me i love my canoe it give me room to stretch out and even stand in i use a kayak paddle to make it go and even a small 18# thrust trolling motor . hard to say but if you can find a place where they let you try them out first - some dealers have a inflatable pool to paddle around or maybe rent or find a friend you can try out. last bit i know you mentioned only kayak but since you mentioned camping you want something light again back to canoe take a look at the Sportspal canoes super light and stable.
Try-before-you-buy is difficult. I bought one second-hand off eBay many years ago and it has served us well. I knew nothing when I bought it and never even had anything to compare it to until last summer when I got to try a friend's one. He'd bought it new from a sporting store.
I found the new one to be a lot less stable and less easy to handle in water with small waves and found new appreciation for my 'old' one.
Edit: mine is a Frenzy by Ocean Kayak. They no longer seem to make that model but their website has a model called the Malibu, which looks like an updated version. They are a New Zealand company but are available in many places.
my first kayak was a cheap 2 person inflatable after i put a skeg on the back it tracked pretty good but wasn't what i wanted but the nice thing they are super compact if space is important not everyone in whitewater . and true about not always being able to try out a kayak or canoe but i've heard of a few places that do. my first kayak was a old town vapor 10 a sit in it was great tracked great and stable but my old legs don't bend like they use to so i bought a pelican canoe i love it although it's just a cheap plastic one it's held up good . i still wanted a kayak to kick around in so i bought a lifetime tamarack sit on to me this is a great starter kayak not to heavy and tracks pretty good and easy to fish from. again like a car it's a personal choice and how many of us bought a car and weren't happy so sold it and bought another , i've had aas many boat as i've had cars lol .
