2013 what new gear have you bought, new yak or canude
Return to Discussionsi'm actually thinking if a inflatable pfd since i got some sporting good gift cards for Christmas but still not sure since i have a really good pfd now, just kinda bulky. i still want another kayak but may wait awhile as every paddle season changes maybe i will stick with my vapor,i keep thinking of a sit on but your so exposed - great for sunbathing but paddling your pretty much in the open where a sit in like my vapor which has a good size cockpit i can pretty much be paddling nude once away from dock/ramp.
hey natravellers hows those canude's and new paddles working out for you two, yes a trailer or pickup truck works best . hope you post a few pictures to the group this year..
The Bending Birch canoe paddles are great on the open water for covering distance quickly. My wife loves it as she still has trouble with the single paddle J stroke.
I like the challenge of the single paddle and it is a must on narrow and faster water. We keep both in the canoes.
We'll hopefully get some new pics up when the season kicks in.
As for the canoes themselves, the Mad River Freedom Solos are a fantastic boat. We're glad we bought them.
i decided against the inflatable pfd and since seeing someone using their bungee cord to hold a pfd to the deck of their sit in -easy to grab. sorry unless rough waters i'm pretty bare and that goes for the pfd. i ordered some eyelets and bungee cord . i still need a waterproof bag and thinking of a compass but places i yak i really don't need the compass. there is really not much you need i guess.
good idea about the compass, never thought about having to hike out but most places i hike are near the big city so on the river probably less than a mile i'd be at the main road and the lakes i yak are surrounded by roads and paths but may pack one of my hand helds just in case. i did get my bungee cords and eyelets now waiting for my drybag - after last year roll at the ramp it would be nice to keep some things dry.
ok got my yak grips today in the mail, i made some last year with velcro but they kept coming undone from the paddle handle this are solid and i guess you wet them and thepaddle and slip them on - can't wait to try them out !
what else can i break ? dragged yak out of storage &hosed& scrubbed it down , i have installed a drain plug at the back so after scrubbing i unscrewed plug and lean it against fence to hose down and get soap and water out - yep broke the little tab you turn to screw it back into plug. break #2 found a recessed fishing rod holder at wallyworld for $5. yeah great deal, so installing it but cordless drill is tired so the yak is on back of truck pointed toward road so decide to switch direction of truck to use elecrtic drill & have power from garage, well out at street i hear something fall off truck - no not the yak but my $5. rod holder now under truck tire - Broke ugh ! oh well i'll find another. i did rivet down bungee clips on front deck to hold my PFD and installed my yak grips - they are really cool and hope keep me from getting blisters . i'm good to go yak , even got some new speedo's for warm weather when i gotta ugh ! wear something. hoping to get on lake this week , it was 68f here today !
well got me a dry bag and another fishing rod holder after i ran the last one over, there is really not much you can put on a kayak. now my son wants to buy it since i have it all fixed up. i wish i could give it to him but don't have cash to buy another without him chipping in and for what i told him it's still a great deal. ifhe does get it i will go with the bass pro acend a10 - it's a kayak with a front deck but open in back like a canoe - sure would be easier for this old guy to get into and better for sunbathing in summer.
anyone buy one of those paddle holders you fasten to side of kayak, my kayak has a moulded in paddle holder right in front of me (vapor 10) and i'm always knocking the paddle so i got the little clamp - plastic and it works great.
