Never thought I'd find Naturist Buddhists.
Return to DiscussionsNever thought I'd find Naturist Buddhists. Have been hopelessly Naturist since the Michael Keaton (aka Edward Craven-Walker) films of c. 1960: joining first club at 18. After ten years at several clubs found that this wasn't the answer: Dukkha. Found Kapilavadho in Hampstead. His first lecture hit me right between the eyes: have never been the same since. After 47 odd years of practice, some monastic, mostly Thai Forest tradition, have finally returned to the source: only to find that both the movement and yours truly have changed beyond all recognition. Imagine the relief of finding this community, no longer feeling there's something radically wrong with the world or [is it?] me.
I would have thought that naturism was right at the core of Buddhism as we believe in equanimity, that everyone is equal regardless of caste, class, wealth or poverty. Buddhists do not discriminate at all and try to ensure that everyone is treated fairly in society. There can be no better way to be equal than when we are naked in the presence of each other because even our clothes can indicate our wealth/poverty level. That may not be every Buddhist's view but it is certainly mine and thus I do believe that Buddhism and nudity do go hand in hand with each other. For me, there is nothing quite like the experience of naked, open air meditation.
