Favorite Stouts and Porters
Return to DiscussionsI'd like to share some of my favorite stouts and porters. I hope others will add some, too, because I love sampling new beers, and the darker they are, the happier I usually am.
I was in a restaurant on a business trip last week in Chicago, and asked the waiter if he had any dark beers to recommend. He said he only had the Dragon's Milk, a bourbon barrel stout. I happily said I would take it. It wasn't until after I ordered that I found it on the menu listed for $14.50 a bottle (22 oz). Ouch. So you only live once.
When it came, he poured the first tall glass from it. Dark, dark, with a tan head. Lots of aroma. Tastes of chocolate and oak and bourbon, and a pleasant sweetness. Very balanced. Very rich.
It was exactly the kind of beer that I don't get tired of as I get to the bottom of the bottle. The second and last glass was just as good as the first. It's the kind of beer you want to hold in your mouth and get all the flavors from, and it's just so rich.
I checked the New Holland Brewing website, and this beer isn't available anywhere within hundreds of miles of Portland, OR. Sad. On the other hand, I'm back in Chicago this week, and I found a bottle shop where I bought two four-packs of 12 ouncers. This beer's too good not to share. Store price: $14 for a four-pack. A steal.
I sit naked in my hotel room tonight, sipping one slowly.

It's as good as I remember.
I found an oatmeal stout tonight, also from New Holland Brewing. It's their "The Poet," complete with an image of a raven on the label. This is a rich smooth oatmeal stout with all the right mix of chocolate and smoke and a little bit of sweet. It's not as rich as the Dragon Milk. The ABV is 5.2%. It's a very nice beer, and was good enough I ordered a second bottle.
I couldn't very well drink it naked in the pizzeria where I found it, but I'll bring some bottles back to the hotel next time I can.
On the recommendation of a friend, I tried a bottle tonight of Firestone Walker's Velvet Merlin, an oatmeal stout with a load of roasty black flavor. It's rich and full-flavored, with not much sweetness. I'm enjoying it naked at home, but it's definitely one I'll buy again and share with friends.
Here in NW Pa. there are several notable micros. Southern Tier brewing is probably
the one most seen in other states, but there is also Ellicotville brewing, Sprague, Blue Moon, Lavery, Erie Brewing.
All fun places to visit, but I don't like driving too soon after the tasting!
The cure for that is to brew at home....got a Stout on tap along with a Rye IPA and
just finished up a Stone Brewery, Ruination clone. Supposed to be an ugly day
tomorrow, and there's an empty keg, so the brew pot will be boiling a Brown Porter.
I've never tried the Edmund Fitzgerald, but have had several Great Lakes brews...never disappointed! Will watch for it and give it a try.I wish more of the micros would offer their brews in cans. Bottles are too much of a PITA to take on an excursion.
I'll second the recommendation for the Edmund Fitzgerald. I tried it for the first time on a business trip to Cleveland when the temperature was in the single digits, and the wind was whipping off of the lake. It was perfect for warming me up from the inside.
I've had it since in more temperate situations, and it is just as good.
Other favorite Porters & Stouts include Bell's Porter (there is some in my fridge right now); Brooklyn Brewery's Black Chocolate Stout, which is great when the weather is really, really cold; Oskar Blues' Ten Fidy--an Imperial Stout; and a local favorite--Sweetwater's Happy Ending.
