What if.....

Imagine if our laws today were geared to enforce nudity rather than forbid it.Imagine police ordering people to uncover rather than cover up as the social & legal norm (weather & climate dependant of course).Think about the implications.....if instead of people judging others by clothes, wealth & body, they instead were conditioned to accept all the "imperfections" our current society dictates to be wrong.It may also be that sexual deviates that give our nudist lifestyle a bad name would be more easily detected by their uncontrollable urges.In turn the law would be on the side of the innocent legal nudist.What changes would my fellow nudists appreciate if this society had ever eventuated???
The thing the clothed people would come up with "It is too
cold to be nude" even if it was the hottest day of the
year. I am happy to be nude out doors if 16C and the sun is out and
no wind but other people will be wanting it to be at least 26C and
the sun out before they would shed their cloths.
If human society had evolved that way, then we wouldn't even consider it as a thing. There would be no concept of nudism as there would be no concept of clothing.
Human nature being what it is, we would still find some means of segregation, and class. All of the other problems would still exist in the world such as racism and sexism.
At least if nobody ever wore clothing, there would be no uniforms or armour, and war injuries would be much more visible.
It certainty sounds like the utopia we all dream of and long for. But, just like the society we live in, there will always be the privileged few that are just a little more equal than everyone else. That line is loosely stolen from Samuel Clemens and I would love to have heard his spin on nudism.
After his death, this comment was found in one of Clemens' notebooks:
Strip the human race, absolutely naked, and it would be a real democracy. But the introduction of even a rag of tiger skin, or a cowtail, could make a badge of distinction and be the beginning of a monarchy.
That sounds about right to me. I wouldn't have any laws requiring people to be either nude or dressed - that's properly left up to individual choice. But short of tyranny, there's no way to keep people from decorating themselves to draw distinctions of class or wealth. I would just remove all laws regarding clothing and/or exposure of the body, and let people wear whatever they want.
As humans, not wearing clothes is the most natural things
individuals can do and wearing them in the most natural thing people in groups
do. Clothes may keep us warm but they
also differentiate people and can be used for power purposes. That is why going in a sauna is so great
where a homeless man could sit next to a bank president and no one could easily
differentiate the two. Mark Twains
quote on democracy is interesting, but he also said this: "Clothes make the man. Naked people have
little or no influence on society." I for one am more than happy to give
up my influence on society for the feel of the wind and sun on my skin outdoors
and among others!
When visiting an Austrian Sauna complex I was impressed about how
relaxed everyone was in their nudity. Nudity is obligatory in those
sauna complexes, just as it would be in the society you propose.
Nobody felt threatened by the naked people around them of either
sex. Nobody felt vulnerable or exposed. There was nothing sexual. It was accepted as a matter
of fact. Maybe this could happen in your society.
However nudists often wear some form of body adornment or
jewellery. There are societies in Africa where nudity is the
norm.They havebody adornment and it can infer status -
a headdress or a lip-plug... .Or a tattoo.
Some anthropologists say the needle and thread was the invention
which saved the human race by enabling the creation of clothes - to
protect against cold, heat and wind. It would be difficult to draft
laws which forbid clothing except for when it is too cold (or too
hot). As others have said we all have different feelings as to
whether a certain temperature is to cold or too hot. Of course an
umbrella can protect against heat as well as rain. (BTW it is fun
hiking naked in the rain carrying an umbrella - typically
English).
I would like to see society accepting that everyone can wear
whatever they want, including going naked if so desired. Laws
generally evolve to reflect whatever society accepts.
