Return to DiscussionsFor those wanting to build an outdoor shower, just do it, don't try to do it legally with a permit, because there's a good chance it is technically illegal. I inquired about what is required with local building code people, and found out that gray water (soapy water) cannot go on to the ground. It has to drain into a sewer, and since rain water can't drain into a sewer, an outdoor shower has to be enclosed with a roof. In other words, no legal outdoor showers where I am. Just put your outdoor shower in a place that cannot be seen from your street or road, and keep your mouth shut.
I would bet your correct. Locally a rural business built a large garage with some intent they could also wash a truck inside as well. The powers to be wouldn't allow a floor drain to the outside. I don't know what the difference is because now they wash the truck in the driveway in front of the garage.
A little easier to get away with doing projects without permits here in our city. With so few inspectors and so much building going on, they are spread paper thin. They seem to concentrate on large projects and push the smaller projects to the side or forget about them entirely. Even pool builders are complaining because they are being held up because the inspectors are too busy to visit homes where pools are being built. We just had some work done to our front and back yard that involved underground electrical work and the contractor said, "this should probably have a permit pulled but I do so much work here in this city that I know what they want. If they come around, I can show them what I did and they'll approve it, but then we'll have to go and get the permit and pay for it!"
The only thing I'd like to do differently is take down our alumawood patio cover and put up a wooden patio cover. Di would really like a porch swing out back and I got no where to hand it from. I'd also like to extend the covered area and lattice areas but all the Alumawood patio companies want to tear our old one down and start over to the tune of about $6000 ... I can put up a wooden one for a sixth of that and buy a boat load of beer and pizza for helpers! :DDD
