Where were those camping spots or were they places you just camped away from others? I travelled the top end 25 years ago with 2 young kids and a pregnant wife. Did not see any naked camp sites. Some European girls wore very little at a couple of swimming holes but did have a g-string /small bikini bottom on.
I was around Alice Springs 15 years ago and drove to some of the sites and water holes. I swam naked, was found by two different couples, one joined me thinking it must be OK, one didn't but was fairly indifferent. I did it because it was hot and like swimming naked.
Is there a guide as such?
