Return to DiscussionsWhen I was 5 years old, my grandmother from Europe was visiting us in suburban Chicago. She took us to the new outdoor mall on a hot summer day and we
kids were drawn to the fountains.
Like any good Northern European, she stripped us and let us play in the
water naked. Id never done that in the
US and thought it was great! I remember
the police coming, her quietly being talked to with her limited English, a
quick hurry to get dressed again, and proudly telling my parents all about it when
we got home. And thats about the
closest Ive come to being arrested.
Whats your story?
My first such encounter was at a Midwestern gravel pit, where about fifty people were swimming - the man and woman I had gone with and I were nude, as were a handful of others. The police arrived to ask everyone to leave, since apparently swimming there was illegal. My friend asked why, and the cop responded by threatening to cite him, and me, for public nudity. I challenged him by noting that he had threatened only the naked men, not the women. A tremendously impolitic thing to say, of course, and he responded by grumbling a threat to my female friend, as well, before dropping the subject when we agreed to leave.
