Two seasons at Vera Playa
Return to DiscussionsI spent two weeks painting another TN member's apartment in Vera Playa, Spain in December and have just returned for a week in June. There were differences and similarities.
December isn't the best time to get naked in Europe, even at Vera Playa which is about as far south as you can get. But the daytime sun made it warm enough to walk around and work naked. Vera Playa is a nudist village in which I could walk everywhere and do anything naked and I had time to relax. I had the long sandy beach almost to myself. Many of the bars and cafes were closed, as was the big hotel. I drew curiosity from the full time residents. For them it was winter - far to cold to be naked. Although I found the daytime sun to be strong a wind would get up at about 3pm making head for shelter. The heated indoor pool became very attractive in the early evenings. So I dressed to go out in the evenings, frequenting the few bars that were open on Hotel Street. Both pubs were friendly, one being famous for its fish and chips, the other for its quiz nights.
June is near high season. Vera Playa was alive with nudists walking the streets, eating, drinking and enjoying the long sandy beach. The sun beat down relentlessly except for one rainy day. The wind often rose again in the afternoon but now it just helped temper the heat of the sun.
All the facilities were open to nudistsincluding the beach bars or Cherenguitos, three cafes buried in the development, sunbed hire, three massage tents and the big hotel. The many facilities on Hotel Street were also open but word was that patrons had to be clothed. My friend and I set a target of being naked 24/7 from when we got into the hire car at Alicante airport. So we chose to avoid Hotel Street, foregoing the fish suppers and the quiz night. But there was plentyof places to eat and drink naked and we just wanted to chill out in the sun.
I found the beach surprisingly uncrowded except around the central Pirate's bar (despite its beer being a bit more pricy). And everyone was naked. Somewore a light wrap to walk to and from the beach. Amusingly this included some who donned the wrap to go to one of the bars, only to take it off again on discovering others already naked. There was a better than usual balance between men and women. All ages were there apart from children of school age (they would be in school) and their parents. Also there wasn't the parade of gawping textiles wandering along the water's edge seen at so many nude beaches
We ate out for lunch and dinner moving between Chrenguito Vera Naturista, the Pirate's bar and Chrenguito Natsun to vary the menu. A small roadside cabin, Punto Nat served the most refreshing fruit juice to clear last night's hangover and set me up for a new day's sun, beer and fast food. But our favourite restaurant was the Oh la la set high overlooking one of the main streets. We relaxed there naked enjoying good food and wine as the sun went down.
It got that I would go out carrying only my small camera case stuffed with my cash, the camera and something to sit on. We had a brilliant week, naked throughout 24/7. Not even a wrap. We only got dressed to get out of the car back at Alicante airport.
