One more person
Now one more person knows about the group. Hi, I'm Jim and live near Pensacola, Florida. Back in the mid '80s I had a CJ-7, in Nevada; I had a lot of fun out in the dirt. This was after I trained in my ~'84 Ramcharger 4x4, 360 quad. Way too expensive to feed, but fun in the dirt. Now my toy is an '07 Rubicon. Stock in '09, but immediately added a cold air intake & Flowmaster exhaust (& when I can stop the manifold heat from melting the plug wires, I'll put the headers back on). An RR front bumper, Warn PowerPlant, steering, pumpkin, trans & pan plates + SpiderTrax spacers also went on board. Just added Goodyear 33 Kevlars & a Skyjacker 3" lift kit. BTW, wish my legs were an inch longer now, well at least my back does anyway. As always, one mod begets another, so when I add the 33 spare, a new bumper & larger tire carrier, (there goes the mileage, again), LED heads & fog/driving lights are next + larger front rotors & pads to slow down the beast, & an RR double X Striker bar in front (unfortunately Amazon wants the same $ as Quadratec for it, & if it'll fit over the Warn PowerPlant). THEN I saw in the latest Quadratec catalog, a couple of turbochargers to counteract the anchor dragging feeling of adding on all the previously mentioned items. When does it ever end? Looking forward to transversing the Eglan woodlands; still looking for a wench to ride shotgun and make my day perfect (Suzie, my rescue pup is great, but she has her limitations.) Alas, I've discovered that Florida is very different from Nevada (and I'm not into mud bogs) but making the best of it. BTW, the Hypertech programmer was worthless until I changed tire sizes. Looking forward to adventures here and someone to share them with. Where are y'all based out of? Jim BTW, how do I put pics here?
Just had it out on I - 10, peddle to the metal; 80 MPH and 12 MPG. I thing that I can do better than that. The biggest difference I've found with the 33's is that it doesn't feel as stable on the road. Guess it's just the higher 'center of gravity'. I relly would like a supercharger or turbo kit. Just read an article on someone that put a supercharger on his JK. Said that he didn'tget much more performance out of it, but it was a lot smoother, and no flat spot at 3K RPM.
Looking for 4x4'ers who enjoy naked 4 wheeling in the Florida Panhandle,
Sounds fun, have no idea where to go in New Mexico but I"m sure there are many trails. What "back road are you plan on taking to Northern Cali ? I am guessing your talking about a back way from Palm Springs area to the Bay area.
Careful in Death Valley, while it is a good time of year temp wise, Rain and flash floods can be a serious issue in the canyons, which I'm sure you well aware of. I was reading a while back about a nude spot around the Panamint springs area. Saw it online I believe, wish I would have saved it. I believe that article stated they went in from Big Pine, but it did mention there were other ways into the area, but coming in from Lone Pine was the best way.
Any way, Question, what does every one have? Jeep, Truck, Some type of SUV, if so what kind. Stock? Lifted? Tire size? winch? etc, etc.
One a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being a very smooth dirt road, 5 being a trail that needs high clearance, 8 would be like the Rubicon Trail, if you don't know that name you should google it, awesome off road trail, and 10 being , well look up the Rubicon and you can guess what a 10 would be. :)
Also, what kind of off road trips do you enjoy time wise? I pretty much keep it to day trips on the trial. Night time comes I lilke the idea of a hot tub and bed. Climbing in to a tent , well I've gotten soft...LOL WE don't always return home at the end of the day, but we do get off the road and head to the hotel.

We will head up the 15 fwy over the Cajon Pass to 395 and take that passed Adelanto. We then veer north on the Old Trona Rd. and drive through Trona, after stopping for fuel and ice. About 35 mins north of Trona is Ballarat, an old Silver/Gold mining Ghost Town. It's a 4 mile dirt road drive to the camping area off the main road. The road can be "washboardie" at times, so it's a slow drive.
Yeah ... well aware of the hazards of Death Valley and learn something new every trip. We won't be venturing up too far into the canyons because that would just freak my wife out. There are enough trails there to increase her experiences without getting too radical or taking any chances. Funny you mention Panamint Springs. Each year we dry camp for a few days and then head to Panamint Springs and spend the afternoon and night so we can take a long, hot shower, eat a hot meal at the restaurant, have some beverages at the bar and dump and refresh our holding tanks for the ride home. It's not fancy but it's clean and enjoyed after minimal services in DV.
The place you're thinking of is Saline Springs. It is a clothing optional hot springs area near Panamint and we've become friends with one of the ladies at Panamint over the last few years. We've talked about going there and she's said that she goes often and that next time we're there for a few days, she'll head out there with us and show us the way. We keep talking about going but haven't been yet.
I have a "Guide to California Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive Trails". After looking up the four main trails we take on our trips out to DV, I found that we take some "Difficult" trails. I can't do any rock crawling but my 4" lift, stock '01 Jeep Cherokee Scout with knobby off road tires did awesome on it's first trip out there. Many of the others with better equipped Jeeps and our Trail Boss, who drives his '73 International Scout, were impressed with how well it did. I'm learning more and more each time we go out.
All our trips, so far, are day trips ... on the DV outing. With my wife, they have only been hour long, at most. She's afraid we'll get stuck and stranded ... I don't take those chances when I'm alone. It is our plan, my buddy the DV Trail Boss and mine, to take my Jeep and his Scout out to Saline Springs and stay or about 4-5 days and explore the desert. I've been scoping out the local area to find some places and there are road to explore east of San Diego out near Jacumba and DeAnza Springs Resort. We'd RV camp there and then venture out for the day.
We aren't hardcore campers anymore. Our days, nights, weekends, weeklong camping trips in our tent and sleeping bags on the ground are long gone. Hot showers, hot tubs, restaurants, bars, massages, room service ... or our motorhome, is as rustic as my wife will get. I can do some of that ol' camping stuff but it can be killer on my bod.
You've got me itchin' to get out there and get off road! :D
