Thinking of finally joining a gym...

I've never gone to a gym in my life. I've always been the skinny kid. But now, after diving more into the nudist lifestyle, the idea of finally going to the gym has entered my mind. I have gained a few more pounds to not be as skinny as I used to be and now i think it is a perfect time to finally workout so I can be in shape. But I still have a fear of going to a gym where people have been working out for a while...and being judged...am I over thinking it?

That's the main factor holding me back...but it's good to hear that the gym is full of diverse people in physical forms...so I won't stand out, cause I wouldn't like that...I like to just fit in

Hey guy. Yeah, we've all been there. Much like going to a nude beach for the first time. All these things we worry or get nervous about beforehand and once you're there and naked you see there was nothing to be nervous about.
Once you've joined a gym try doing cardio your first couple of visits like the treadmill, stairmaster and stationary bike. This gives you the opportunity to ease into just being at the gym. If you have a view of the floor you can scope out the people and see what's going on. If you plan on using a trainer to get you started it's also a great way to watch all of them and figure out which one might be good for you. You can hire a trainer for a few sessions just to show you the basics and machines and give you a plan if you want. Otherwise YouTube is a great resource to learn about using the machines and free weights the correct way. I even learned how to use the speed bag from a youtube video and was hitting it like a pro within minutes of my first try.
There's one thing you should do as a priority. Make a few gym friends your first week there. Just make a reason to speak to someone then work in a subtle compliment about their physique. Believe me, anyone that's been working to achieve a better body will eat up any recognition of their work. You'll be on their friend list instantly. Once you have a few friends at the gym it makes a big difference in going.
You're smart to start now, as you get older it's harder to get results. Plus you already have a very good physique to start with so you should see toning and muscle definition in no time. Good luck!

You have said that you "like to just fit in." You fit in also just by going. Too many go for a short period of time and drop out. Go and don't drop out. You will be glad you did.

You are absolutely over thinking it!!!!!I have gone to gyms for most of my adult life, there are people of all shapes and sizes there.. Some just starting out and others who have been going for years... the main thing is your there working on your body and your mind! I find gyms to be a place where most everyone is supportive of each other. If I see someone who is just starting out and not in the best of shape.. I think "good for them, there here and not sitting at home eating a cookie" Bravo!Stop thinking about it and do it if you want.. but always check out there cancellation policy, you don't want to get stuck in a trap that cost a fortune to get out of. Most places now have it where you give notice and can get out of the deal by just paying for 1more month's fee, and you can still workout for that month..
I hope that helps..

Thank you all for the feedback, it is really helping me out. It gives me the motivation to try one out. I saw these 1 week passes, to try out the gyms for free, I think I will do that to check it out first. I think someone told me that I need to buy a lock for the locker room lockers...and I need to buy athletic clothes or at least some clothes to workout out in cause I have none of those..I seriously am not prepared for the that.
