The 1993 release of the movie "Groundhog Day," starring Bill Murray, brought new attention to the occasion. The population of Punxsutawney, Pa. is about 6,000, but after the movie's release the number of people coming to town for Groundhog Day has been recorded at up to 30,000

On Feb. 2, 2014, New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio dropped Staten Island Chuck while handling the groundhog. Chuck, who was actually Charlotte, was found dead in her enclosure at Staten Island Zoo on Feb. 9. A New York Post report Sept. 25, said the zoo performed a necropsy and found the groundhog had died from "acute internal injuries" consistent with a fall.
