Southern California Kayak Newbie

Hi all... just wondering if any of you in SoCal can recommend local lakes and rivers for beginner kayakers? I am not interested in ocean kayaking... too deep, and too many critteers swimming around! Also, does anyone have experience kayaking with dogs? Thanks!
