Nude Dook in Forth - Marie Curie Cancer Charity Event
The
Forth is about to be invaded by nude dookers.
"Wewanted to do something that encourages people to live life to the
full," explains Isobel Paul, regional events manager for Marie
Curie in Scotland.
"Toembrace everything fun and new and live the way perhaps those who are
no longer with us would have wanted to live if they could."
Isobelis one of the organisers behind the charity's latest fundraising
adventure - a world record breaking skinny dip attempt.
"Wehave something at Marie Curie called The Big Idea which we run
every year for our staff," Isobel explains.
"Everyonewho works for us submits an idea that they have - anything really,
for Marie Curie to take on or adopt. It could really be anything
though generally people tend to come up with fundraising ideas.
"Theskinny dip one came in and we all thought it was brilliant."
"InJune 2011 we gave it a go and 413 people signed up and jumped in
naked off the coast of Wales."
Togetherthey raised 40,000 for the charity and now, this summer, they're
taking the idea a step further by holding four different skinny dips
in the North of the UK, including the Forth, all on the same day.
Theattempt will take place on June, 2, with the locations only being
released once bathers sign up.
"Wewill aim to get everyone in the water at 7am and to qualify for a
world record, swimmers need to be in the water for a minimum of ten
minutes," explains Isobel.
"Youhave to be over 18 to apply and once you do well send you the
exact information of our secret locations. Its not going to be a
spectator sort of event this is for those who are actually taking
part it.
"It'sfor those who want to do it just for the fun of it. Or those who are
doing it for someone who means a lot to them."
TheMarie Curie charity is dedicated to helping those suffering from
cancer by providing specialist care homes and nurses for those coping
with the disease.
Accordingto Cancer Research UK, every two minutes someone in the UK is
diagnosed with cancer with one in three of us being diagnosed with a
type of cancer during their lifetime.
Withover the course of a year inBritain, the work and support of Marie Curie is seen as valuable and
vital to those fighting the disease.
Thanksto the generosity of people in the Lothians, 23 Marie Curie Nurses'
were able to care for 273 patients last year, and now they're hoping
a big dip will help raise funds to keep the support on offer.
"Iwould do the dip too if I could but I think Im running around
organizing," admits Isobel. "I used to volunteer for Marie
Curie and only recently took up the post of events manager with them.
"Irecently lost my sister and wanted to take the role on. Although its
really sad, its good to do something meaningful and encourage some
good to come out of a sad situation.
"Weregoing to have t-shirts made as a memento for those who take part and
hopefully some thick warm towels too.
"Therewill also be a hot breakfast afterwards and a decent cup of tea to
warm cold dippers."
Dipperswanting to take part canthough you must be
over 18 to do so. The event will take place on June, 2, at a location
that will be released only upon registration.
