If you're going to a public place that allows it, take a puppy (even if it's the neighbors). Greatest conversation starter I ever had (Especially if the puppy is a yellow lab that's afraid of the water :) - she eventually learned that swimming is fun, then I couldn't get her out). I recommend smile and say, "hi" or make that weather comment or ask if the water is cold.
