I too was told today that I was not a True Nudist. It came after someone said there is a difference between being naked and being nude. I asked what the difference was and the reply was..."If you don't know the difference...you're not a True Nudist!" He was serious and I started to call him out, but decided it wasn't worth it. I still see no difference...they are just words..... meaning the same thing
Not sure if this qualifies as 'trolling', but would welcome your opinion. In the chat room, I post what I consider to be a witty aside (as seems to be a common occurence). My comment is not insulting in any way. It is not aggressive and does not single out any individual. In fact, it is rather self-deprecatory.Within seconds, I receive a personal message containingabuse directed at me for my comment. I hesitate before replying, but do so with words to the effect that I don't want to dignify the sender by replying in kind. Obviously, that was a mistake!Almost instantaneously, in the open chat room, I am accused of being a 'not a real nudist' and an 'old pervert' who should 'get a life'. There was more, but I don't remember it all. Apparently the person who posted these comments came to this conclusion for the following reasons: 1 My profile photos are all indoor shots and 2 they appear to have been taken with a timer. So they are. I admit that freely. However, I do not feel that I need to justify the fact.Despite receiving support from other members in the chat room, I found the whole thing very disquieting and am seriously considering withdrawing from the site. In the meantime, I have changed my photos to 'friends only'. No doubt thisaction and withdrawing from the site will be seen by the person who made this personal attack as confirmation of his accusation. Shades of Senator McCarthy . . .So, my question is . . . is this an example of 'trolling'? By the way, the poster was quick to leave the chat room when he/she saw that not everybody appreciated his comments.
Hard to say since I don't know what your initial comment was. If this was on the non-private chat, I'm surprised he got away with it without anyone else questioning his motives.
Witty comments per se aren't trolling. Maybe it was just a big misunderstanding. Sort of like the poor British chap who told the cigarette smokers at a U.S. high school that he didn't want to see any fags thrown about. In Britain, fags are cigarette butts. In the U.S., the word has avery different connotation. Sometimes, that's all it takes.

Not technically, no. It's more a flame.
Trolling doesn't involve an attack on any one individual, usually, though it may to prolong an argument, and dominate a thread to the great detriment of any value the thread may have had.
Flaming is an attack on an individual. Equally as distasteful as trolling at best.
The primary difference is that trolling doesn't care who is baited into the argument, but only that one is provoked.
A flame is directed at an individual singled out for abuse.
Gerry's post #1 is exactly 100% on target, with one and only one correction.
Don't even post that they've been flagged !
Totally and completely ignoring a troll is the ONLY effective way of dealing with them. Period.
It's always effective. 100%.
ANY response to a troll lets them know there are fish in the area, and so they persist.
Absolutely any response at all plays into their hand, and is always self-defeating, plus cluttering up the forum
with useless tripe, and generally making it an unfriendly place.
how do you associate children with being a troll. a way different topic and no where close to what a troll represents.......children are pure and they learn what they are taught.........just shaking my head here on what you think children and trolls have in common
You completely misunderstand my use of the word.
"Children" in this context meaning not those of tender years, but those who appear to be mentally stuck at a much earlier era in their own development.
When we tell a child to just grow up, we often forget that is exactly what they are doing.
We generally mean something quite different when addressing a physical adult.
It's important to note that to me, thought provoking comments or posts that are intended to begin a debate-even a lively one- are not trolling. As long as it is a substantive debate wtih a legitimate POV and it is not intended to simply cause a fight..
I am glad you said that.
