Ritual Nudity?
Okay everyone, I'm new here!
I joined this forum for several reasons but first let me explain what I mean by religious reasons. I am a Wiccan and I used to be a solitary until recently when I applied to a Coven. Some rites are practiced naked in some traditions and well, I've never been naked in front of anyone before.
The fact that the nudity has nothing sexual is obvious to me but still I feel awkward enough when I am clothed and have people looking at me so I'm not sure what it would be like to be naked in front of others. Another thing is confidence, I don't have an athlete body unlike most other people in their twenties that I know as I have love handles. I know, I know many people do and no one is perfect but still appearance has always been very important to me, and that is unfortunate I know. Then there's the obvious fear of having an erection... Unlike nudist beaches or other locations I don't think an erection would be tolerated during a ritual nor are there any towels that can be used to cover oneself... My last hesitation is walking barefoot, I know this sounds strange but I always felt very very awkward whenever I had to walk barefoot - I suppose one gets used to it?
I'd very much appreciate any advice I can get! Thank you all!
Many Wiccans do not practise skyclad (nude). I am not Wiccan but have worked with many, most of whom are clothed. Skyclad working is not sexual and few really care what a person's physical shape or form looks like and are too busy to worry about it so you would probably quickly adjust. Erection worries are also usually unfounded and rare. I am reprinting an intro I did to a Wiccan group some time ago: I hope it helps.
I am Pagan, having been initiated into the Celt-Gael Tradition, an Irish Trad, in 1962 while serving with the British Army in Germany. Celt-Gael is a skyclad (nude) Trad brought about as a renewal of the old Irish traditions which later had, I think a Gardnerian influence grafted onto it which would explain the skyclad mode of worship/practice. My experience of late has been primarily with eclectic/Wiccans and Pagans in Kingston and seperately with my late wife and a few others in the Celt-Gael manner.
Pagan spirituality is extremely diverse primarily due to the vast amount of information, both historic and speculative available today. Most however, do consider a duality of God and Goddess in whatever form they manifest. The Celt-Gael is, being Irish, triplicity based but does include the God and Goddess figures.
My second post to that group was:
As mentioned in my introduction my Trad, Celt-Gael, is a skyclad tradition and I have thus practiced skyclad from 1962 to the present. I also work with eclectics and at that time I am clothed in deference to their customs. I have found that when I am skyclad everything seems to work better and on the admittedly rare occasions when eclectics have taken part in Celt-Gael ritual they have reported a feeling of unity and closeness to deity which is much stronger than what they normally experience.
It all boils down to what a group feels comfortable with and many just don't feel comfortable with nudity. By the way, though we work skyclad most Celt-Gael practitioners are not nudists
Yes they are Gardnerians and so nudity plays an important role.
As others have said, please fill in your profile. The Gardnerian tradition is mandated skyclad so nudity is not optional but required. If you find that this would be too difficult or distracting for you I would advise against joining this tradition. Other Wiccan traditions and most eclectic Wiccan groups are clothed and you would be better off contacting them. I can understand why you would come to a nudist site with your question but TN is geared towards nudists, not religious activity. You might be better off posing your questions in a Wiccan forum where you can get responses from non-nudists. As in every other segment of life the majority of Pagans and Wiccans, whether skyclad or not are not nudists and probably comprise about the same percentage as general society.
