The vanishing nudists/naturists
Where Are All the Supporters? The Curious Case of Naturists Silent Struggle for Space
Its a peculiar thing, really. Everywhere you go in the naturist community, youll hear familiar laments: Why arent there more places to be clothes-free? or How could they shut down that beach? The frustration is real, and for good reasonnaturists and nudists worldwide face an ongoing shortage of places to enjoy their lifestyle in peace. And when these precious spaces are threatened or disappear, its often met with a chorus of outrage in online forums, at meetups, and across social media. But then something surprising, almost humorous, happens: when theres a real chance to make a difference, to show up in numbers or sign a petition, the enthusiasm seems to vanish.
Its as if, when push comes to shove, these very same voices of discontent suddenly find themselves unable to lift a finger. Why is that?
The Great Vanishing Act of Naturist Advocacy
For decades, naturist communities worldwide have fought to carve out and protect spaces for clothes-free living, whether its a beach, a park, or a hiking trail. Many of these places are constantly under threat from development, policy changes, or public complaints, leaving naturists scrambling to protect what little is available. But, frustratingly, when organisers create petitions or call for demonstrations to protect these spaces, its often a struggle to gather even a handful of signatures or volunteers.
Its not uncommon to hear naturists vent in frustration, If only we had more support, we could protect this beach! And yet, when the time comes to support that fight, where does everyone go? As it turns out, nudists and naturists tend to be quiet when it comes to advocacy.
The Curious Case of Armchair Activism in Naturism
Theres a bit of irony in the naturist community, known for its values of freedom, self-expression, and being true to oneself. You would think a group that champions those ideals would leap at the chance to support their shared spaces. And yet, it seems as though many naturists are more comfortable voicing concerns online than taking concrete steps to bring about change.
Petitions circulate, advocacy groups are formed, rallies are scheduledand, bafflingly, they struggle to gain traction. Theres no shortage of people ready to comment and criticise when a space is lost, but getting those same people to take the smallest actionsuch as signing a petitionis a bit like herding cats.
Why Naturists Need to Stop Sitting on Their Hands
The paradox here is almost comedic. Imagine a massive online naturist forum, hundreds of members chatting away about how much they cherish their favourite beach. But when its announced that the beach may close, and theres a petition circulating to stop it, the sign-ups fall embarrassingly short of the membership count.
This is more than just an inconvenienceits a real problem for the future of naturism. Local governments and councils take numbers seriously. A petition with thousands of signatures can make all the difference in saving a beloved naturist space.
Without a stronger collective effort, naturists may find themselves in a future where their lifestyle is even more restricted. Every signature, every person who turns up at a rally, every letter to local authorities counts.
Lets Laugh, But Lets Also Learn
So yes, its a bit funny in a tragic way. The same folks who will spend hours online lamenting the lack of spaces dont always step up when theyre needed most. But the punchline here could end up being a harsh one: if naturists dont unite and get serious about advocacy, they risk watching those last few precious places vanish.
Lets hope that someday soon, naturists everywhere will realise that protecting their spaces is a team effort. If they truly want to see a future with more naturist-friendly places, theyll need to do more than talk about ittheyll need to stand up and make their voices heard. After all, without action, naturisms greatest support might just be its own quietest whisper.
I agree with you in that statement, but there is something to consider. I believe the big majority of "Naturists/Nudists" are in the closet. They don't want their family, friends, coworkers learn that they are nudists. A website like this one and forums are a good place to be oneself yet not publicly, as a it suppose to be a "protected environment" that only nudists can access.
I personally find myself in this situation since I would gladly support signing petitions and being present in rallies, yet I cannot do it due to my family, friends, coworkers and neighbors not knowing I am a nudist, and I have to hide it since I know they would not understand and approve it, by the opposite, it could cost me my family while at the same time hurting them.
That personal situation doesn't allow me to participate in advocacy or even some nudist social events, and my presence in a site like this is not for the reason of meeting other nudists in person as a fully open nudist myself (unless lots of discretion are agreed) but rather more like an opportunity to be myself (a nudist trans woman) in a sort of protected environment that will allow me to keep my secrets to protect my family from the pain of something they will not understand. I imagine many nudists/naturist would be in a similar situation as I am, thus they cannot participate in advocacy for the naturist cause.
All this is obviously in relation to naturists/nudists in the "closet", while your points are absolutely true when it is about naturists/nudists that are out of the closet and can openly tell and be seen without compromising their families and careers.
Hugs, Angela.
I'd like to agree that the naturist community follows values of freedom, self-expression, and being true to oneself. Unfortunately I find it rather fractured. Older heterosexual couple naturists discriminate against single men. Gay naturists often have separate groups. There's really no place for younger singles or for families with small children. That makes any movement vanish.
