Seems like hotel video surveillance is not an issue. Either they are not catching you, as the staff usually has better things to do, or they dont care.

The staff won't do anything unless they get a complaint from a customer (guest, diner or visitor). They don't want all the hassle that is involved if they can avoid it, especially as you are a paying customer and the worst they can do is throw you out, and that will usually mean losing money for the owner.
I have only once worn a thong in a public hotel pool but always wear a tan-through tanga which I find more comfortable and have never had any problems although, if there are no other guests who might object, I prefer to swim naked.
I have also worn that swim thong to stop at a caf for a beer when on a naked cycle ride - again without problems.
I have been seen by hotel staff when swimming naked as well as being captured on CCTV and meeting staff when walking naked between the pool and the changing/locker room without any repercussions.
By flsmoothieSaturday I wore a thong at the beach and driving home through St. Pete and Tampa. Slipped on some shorts when we got home as to not scandalize the neighbors.
Admittedly it was late evening and seemed quiet but I did dare to go as I was from the driveway to the front door. Nice to have air against skin in places where it's not usual.

Not in public, but I bought a thong to wear in my own pool before we got the privacy fence, I found the string going up my butt crack very annoying so I tried a very brief tanga, which was much more comfortable for me.
Once we got the privacy fence, I got rid of it. I didn't have to wear anything in my own pool and I wasn't daring enough to wear it anywhere else.
