I wish I was more of a mechanic

I can do some repairs on our cars but my knowledge and confidence is lacking for many of the tougher things on the engine and trans. YouTube is a huge help and I use it quite often. We just had work done on my wife's '06 TJ. The trans shifter cable broke and it needed to be replaced. I took it to a place I trust but still, after some research, I wonder if the entire cable really needed to be replaced.

One of the upsides to having it done at a shop is that they have the coveted hydraulic lift. If every garage came with one, I think many repair shops would go out of business! hahaha Even though, if I had one, I'd probably not use it as much as I think. Fluid changes is about all I'd tackle. I'm just not that knowledgeable about the engine bay and all the workings that make that car go.

In the end, the car was fixed and back on the road. It cost a little but we knew going in that buying a used car that is almost 20 years old, we'd encounter repairs along the way. I asked my wife if she wanted to go look at new cars, one with a lot more accessories and comfort. She said, "no, I love my little Jeep!" I guess we'll spend some money here and there for repairs instead of a huge monthly payment for a new car that will most likely sit most of the time.

RE:I wish I was more of a mechanic

Was a mechanic for 35 years or a little more. just because you can do it does not always mean you should. my 93 yj has an internal slave cylinder for clutch. I do not have a transmission jack that would handle the 4 x 4 trans etc. could have rigged something up on the floor but back is not what it was so chiropractor visit costs etc. figured I was better having it done. I agree U-tube is great asset now adays. My old 93 is kind of tired has had a rebuilt trans and Engine and of course it was made when chrysler was going broke, but wife loves it and it has not been to bad lately. Want to get some good pictures of her with Jeep just have not gotten around to it yet. I really enjoy having it when ice and snow on roads end up carrying to work sometimes. Tornado did a number on the body about three years ago and did not get it all fixed figured I would not want to scratch it up if it was to pretty.
