I also played Australian Rules Football and the sleeveless Guernsey's meant the outs were on display. Most guys 'tamed' their pits as a minimum. So I could be somewhere in between during the winter with my pits growing back. Then in summer completely removed again.
Now much older I still practise the cycle and my wife will actually make mention if I allow them to grow back more than half during summer!
I had a couple of male friends who told me about shaving their armpits. One is a body builder/weightlifter, the other is a profession man who is in a suit and tie most all the time. Both shared about how much cooler and easier it was to stay odor free and there were no more dark stains from deodorant on their t-shirts. So, I gave it a try. And to my amazement they were correct. So, I have shaved my under arms for the last couple to three years now. I would not go back to hairy armpits. I also shave my genitals and part of my chest.
