...and so it begins...
Well, tomorrow begins the baptism by fire of synchronous teaching online via Zoom meetings (designed so if we can resume campus teaching, the students will already know their regular class schedules and just need to find the classroom... :P ) I lucked out and the school set up my campus office as my "studio" so that I can lecture comfortably and not worry that the students can't hear me very well. (The office has much better acoustics than the classroom/ampitheater would have.) So, I will be on campus dressed like a reasonable approximation of an adult on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as my back-to-back classes are scheduled at 9:30 am and 11:00am....I will actually be done teaching for the day by 12:30 pm. I can be home by 1:30 pm, and have a plan for stripping down immediately and tossing the clothes in the washing machine. Luckily, any other issues with students will be handled via email or via chat in Blackboard. That means that except for actual lecture time, I can keep "teaching" in the nude! Yay!
I am not sure how well the students are going to handle the transition, which did not go well for spring semester's sudden change, but I think I'm prepared for it. I am trying to look at it as good preparation for eventually designing and teaching full online courses so that I can also have a paycheck during the summer semester :P . Adjuncts have to do whatever we can to keep ourselves up to date and expanding our teaching repetoires. The tenured folk can stay stuck in the 1990s because they are permanent employees...
Update:
We are now in week 12 of 15, and so far so good. My students are pretty well engaged despite the awkward format. Some show up as black squares in the zoom meeting because they are "tuning in" on their phones, the others are in their rooms at home with the occasional pet or sibling wandering through the frame LOL. Other than a few glitches with certain Blackboard applications, we have been doing rather well with their tests and written assignments. The majority of them are also passing except for 1 or 2 which seem to have simply disappeared.
As of now, the spring semester is expected to be run on the same format, though my schedule will be different as I will have 1 class at 11 am, and the second at 2 pm, which will simply mean getting to campus later in the morning than now (8:30 am). I like having time between classes to do grades and such so I don't have to do it at home, and will probably enjoy being off campus again by 4 pm. It will also remain as just a Tuesday/Thursday schedule until further notice, with COVID mouth swab tests every 2 weeks.
Hope everyone else is doing fine despite the election/COVID craziness!
I found a way to work with my students from home! I do not have video at home, so my actual classes happen via zoom from my campus office. However, towards the end of the semester, the program we use added the ability to schedule and run non-video chat rooms for students.
So, I was only able to schedule one 2 hour chat session before the end of semester, but since I can do those from home....well, that first session which was quite active over 2 hours meant I can truly say I am able (some of the time) to actually teach in the nude!
For spring semester, I will be on campus for clothed live zoom sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays (half days for 2 classes) and at home for a 2 hour chat session on Wednesdays while comfortably nude. Once they open fully online (no video) classes again, I will teach nude from home all the time.
Happy Nude Year 2021!
