Mine is a multi use. It carries a towel, my drinks and snacks, and some basic supplies. Usually not needed. Plus my ham radio, phone, and id. For me it is training weight to better my hiking and general endurance. When I get to the beach or hot springs it becomes my base and I wander freely.
I should make a new bottle carrier for shorter hikes.
My preferred walks are not super long (perhaps 10 km) so I don't take water or a pack. I do generally take footwear and, if in daylight, a cap (I consider them accessories rather than clothes in this context) and I'll just carry my items in my hand or stash them somewhere until I return. One additional option if I've only got a swimsuit to carry is to stash it beneath my cap. The suit takes very little space. :-)
I agree that it feels just wrong to take a nude hike and be encumbered by a backpack. I wear a hat and shoes, but nada on the backpack. I stash my cloths, plus some water and snacks, and go back for some refreshment at some point. When on a trail, I don't take any "emergency" clothes. I am not ashamed to be out in nature in a natural way, so why worry? Of course, stashing my clothes and other things carries some risk. I have been unable to find them after my hike. Twice I was at near panic stage before locating them. I hid them to keep them from other hikers, but ended up hiding them from myself, at least for a little while.
i've read about nudist stashing they're clothes at the trailhead my two problems with that is suppose someone steals them probably not but maybe , iv'e driven nude home after a few hikes of course that depends on the parking area and second a few places i hike i don't end up where i start . i still prefer my shoulder bag it carries my snack , first aid kit, phone , small light weight ground cloth and water bottle on outside i drape my shorts over outside of bag but the encounters i've had i never had a chance to slip them on .
I like to also hike with a backpack. When I hike alone its important to stay safe from accidents. A slip here or someone elses mistake.
I keep a sarong under my belt for those need to cover up fast. I dont have to try to jump into shorts fast. A hiking friend has cut out the seam in the shorts for a none tangled jump. lol
