The pictures you send in for verification do not get added to your gallery, although you can upload them yourself if you'd like to. Its less formality and more verification.

I have been certified. Are the pictures that I submitted just a formality or will they be visible to the site?

The old site when I got certified said they will be removed from the computer system so there should be no record at all left of them, but you can add them to your profile if you want to.
